Monday Morning Monster; Swimming Mermaid

Yay, Monday Morning Monster is back again!  Yay!
Last week I was unavoidably out of the studio, but now I'm back and here's a paintup of one of my mermaids from the old Monster a Day series.

For comparison, here's the original sketch.

As you can see, to make decisions about color is to make decisions about light.  To make decisions about light is to make decisions about the environment.  There are metaphorical implications to this...

Artist tricks explained -- the switch from leftwards to rightwards was nigh-accidental, a side effect of switching the art back and forth to check how the face looked from either angle.  In traditional painting, you can see drawing flaws more clearly by looking at the art in a mirror, which gives you fresh eyes to see things you otherwise overlook.  In digital media, the equivalent flopping from side to side is so damn easy that I lost all interest in which way the thing was supposed to go and just called it finished when I liked the overall look.

My only other thought is that I can certainly keep working on that refracted water thing...

  1. I can't draw worth a lick, but I do take a lot of photos of water. I've always been amazed at the what the real texture of water looks like.
